300 SCHOOLS IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS DRIVE WIRELESS E-LEARNING INITIATIVE WITH ARUBA NETWORKS MULTIMEDIA-GRADE WI-FI

Madrid, Spain, February 9, 2011 - Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN), today announced that the Spanish Department of Education and Government of the Balearic Islands is deploying Aruba's 802.11n Multimedia-Grade Wi-Fi in schools and education offices across the four islands to enable e-learning. The total deployment will cover 300 schools and 20,000 students.

"E-learning can have a very positive effect on student performance. However, for it to be effective, staff and students need access to the same applications wherever they are, and for it to be cost efficient a common infrastructure must be in place," said Antoni F. Vaquer Mestre, telecommunications chief of the Balearic government. "As an island community, it was clearly essential to find a wireless solution that was centrally controlled, scaled from the smallest to the largest school and was, ideally, designed to handle the capacity and latency requirements of e-learning applications in busy classrooms. Aruba's 802.11n Multimedia-Grade Wi-Fi solution not only met these requirements, but also offered superior RF performance for avoiding sources of interference and optimizing network and application performance in real-time."

Each school is connected to the administrative offices in Palma de Mallorca over a wide area network (WAN), from which the IT team provisions services. Aruba's AirWave Wireless Management Suite (AWMS) is used to centrally monitor and manage the network that delivers connectivity to the students, staff, school inspectors, administrative staff and guests on each site. "For many of the schools, this was the first IT infrastructure they have had, and of course some of them are rural. Though we take the time to make an RF plan of each site, Aruba's Adaptive Radio Management makes installation and ongoing optimization simple and less costly than a comparable wireless or wired infrastructure. We get exceptional visibility into network performance and the RF within the schools and offices by using AirWave with Visual RF. It's an easy to deploy solution with excellent management and reporting." Vaquer Mestre concluded.

AWMS helps the Balearic Government manage the network of remote schools on a day-to-day basis and also plan for future deployments by highlighting which sites, classrooms, access points and even users are most active.

  • Mobility: Central configuration and security policies allow users to move freely between classrooms, schools and administrative offices while maintaining a seamless network experience
  • Capacity: Adaptive Radio Management enables organisations to deploy and maintain high performance wireless networks with ease; it is not necessary to have RF specialists on hand during the installation or for day-to-day operation of the network
  • Application Assurance: Application aware architecture manages varying network demands; ensuring that e-learning and other mission-critical applications are prioritized in busy classrooms and auditoriums.
